      The Ultimate Steal is Broken

      By Hek | September 9, 2008

      No “wow” to be found.

Last year, Microsoft started a great program, called the “Ultimate Steal“, through which students could purchase Office Ultimate for $69 (normally around $500!)  This year, the program is back and they’ve also added Windows Vista Ultimate.  I decided to take advantage, thinking I’d give Vista a shot despite all the bad press.

Mistake.  I paid my $65 and received a download link to a file named “X14-63452.exe”.  Upon running the program, it stops and asks for three other files: vistasetupprep.exe, boot.wim and install.wim which are nowhere to be found on the download page.  I’ve contacted Digital River, the providers of the program, twice to no avail.

Just to be sure this was not an isolated case, I did a little searching and found some forums with people having the same experiences here (post #69) and here (post #21)

This Microsoft program is a great idea, but the execution, at least in this case, is extremely flawed.  I just wanted to get the word out there if you’re considering plunking down your money.  I guess I’ll be calling my credit card company to try to dispute the charge if I don’t hear back…

      Any suggestions?

      Pinot and the Bug

      By Hek | June 11, 2008

The other night after watching Michael Clayton (good movie, by the way) Pinot found a little bug on the floor and proceeded to torture it to death in the cutest way possible.  I took the little video below. Enjoy!

Where to get (Legal) Free Music for your iPod

      By Hek | June 2, 2008

      Tunes are expensive!  (Credit: www.droxy.com)

You might know about the free song of the week on iTunes and Amazon (and if you don’t, what are you waiting for?  GO get the free music!!) but iPod-focused site iLounge has a great article on even more sources of legal free music for your iPod or MP3 player.

But I get them for free on Limewire or BitTorrent, you say?  Sure it’s free, but remember you might be getting a virus along with that song!  You might want to get your connection tested

      Wiil You be Fit?

      By Hek | May 18, 2008

Just wanted to share an interesting article on what’s expected to be the next game sensation from Nintendo: Wii Fit.

It sounds like it won’t make you buff like Richard Simmons, but I guess it’s better than sitting on your couch all day!

Here is the Article: O.K., Avatar, Work With Me - New York Times

Speaking of Richard Simmons, check out this little treat below:

Whoa! Someone thinks I’m a Role Model

      By Hek | May 14, 2008

That’s me on the upper right of the HENAAC Homepage!  Only for the week of May 12 though…

Of course I kid with the title of the post.  I am very honored (and humbled) to say that I have been chosen as the “Role Model of the Week” by HENAAC.  It is an organization devoted to Promoting Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in the Hispanic community.  They are based in Los Angeles, CA and hold an annual award ceremony recognizing standout engineers and scientists from around the country.

Check out their site here: HENAAC

And my “Role Model” page with (what some consider to be an unintentionally funny) picture and short bio here.

PS. I’m not the only one who has been recognized; check out my friend Glenda’s page as well.

      Who needs a Fax Machine?

      By Hek | May 3, 2008

      Sweet, Sweet Revenge (Credit:blog.pricegrabber.com)

I honestly can’t remember the last time I sent a fax that wasn’t work related, but of course there are those out there still stuck in the middle ages that will ask you to send a fax.  But what do you do if you don’t have a fax machine? (or even a phone line, like me)  Simple; drop.io is a completely free and simple service to help you fax a document (PDF or Miscrosoft Word) to anybody (in the US) right over the internet.  From their site:

“To send a fax from your drop to a recipient:
      1. Click on ‘send’ and then select ‘fax’ next to any document (.doc) or PDF
      2. Enter the 10 digit fax number of the recipient (our service is US only)
      3. Your fax is sent, end of story”

Did it help you out?  Check it out here: Drop.io fax

      Iron Man in Real Life

      By Hek | April 29, 2008

You could do this, right? (credit: PopSci.com)

This is wild.  You might have heard of the upcoming Iron Man movie based on the comic where a rich man builds a suit that gives him superpowers.  Fiction, right?  Well, yes, but Popular Science has an article on the XOS Exoskeleton being built by Sarcos (a Raytheon subsidiary) which is a start to that lofty goal.  Basically a person can strap this thing on and it allows for additional strength with minimal strain on the wearer.  I wonder when we’ll be able to buy one of these?  I want one that would help me dunk.  (and maybe give me some actual basketball skills)

Check out the Article: Building the Real Iron Man | Popular Science

And the video: The XOS Exoskeleton in Action
